FG, World Bank Unveil Model Veterinary Hospital, Integrated Livestock Centre in Enugu

In a major boost to Nigeria’s livestock sector, the Federal Government, through the World Bank–financed Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), has unveiled a Model Veterinary Hospital in Akwuke, Enugu State. The government also performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the Enugu State Integrated Livestock Centre at Ubahu, Nkanu East LGA.

The initiative, implemented by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, is part of the landmark agricultural reform programmes of the Tinubu-led administration. The Ministry has already constructed and equipped seven additional model veterinary hospitals across the country.

Speaking at both events, the Minister of Livestock Development, Hon. Idi Mukhtar Maiha, described the Akwuke Model Veterinary Hospital as a “Centre of Excellence” designed to enhance animal health delivery nationwide. He noted that the broader livestock centre at Ubahu is a state-of-the-art facility with an initial capacity to hold 15,000 cattle, built on a holistic value chain encompassing beef and dairy production, processing, packaging, marketing, and leather works.

Representing the Enugu State Governor, Barr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, the Deputy Governor, Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai, said agriculture remains the state’s fastest route from poverty to prosperity. He praised the Ministry for supporting the State’s vision to establish world-class agricultural infrastructure, noting that the Ubahu livestock hub is designed to meet international standards required for export certification and global market access. He added that the programme will “absorb youths into gainful employment.”

The National Project Coordinator of L-PRES, Dr. Sanusi Abubakar, described the Akwuke facility as the first of its kind in the entire South East, designed to promote sustainability, expand service coverage, and strengthen public–private partnerships in line with global best practices.

Also speaking, the Enugu State Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialization, Dr. Patrick Nwabueze Ubru, said the Integrated Livestock Centre is the brainchild of Governor Mbah, reflecting his vision to position Enugu as a hub for innovation, employment, and world-class agricultural practices.

The event also featured the commissioning of a Hilux van for logistics, a fully equipped ultra-modern veterinary clinic building, and the official groundbreaking of the Enugu Livestock Ranch Project.

In their separate remarks, the Chairmen of Enugu South, Celeb Ani, and Nkanu East, Sydney Okechukwu Edeh, thanked the Minister and the State Government for siting such transformative projects in their local government areas.
