Enugu residents are currently enduring prolonged power outages following a reduction in electricity supply by MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited.
The company explained in a statement released in early August 2025 that the reduction was due to limited energy allocation from the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company. The situation, it said, was linked to financial challenges arising from a new tariff adjustment made by the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission, which reviewed the Band A tariff from N209.50 per kilowatt hour to N160.40 per kilowatt hour.
The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company warned that applying the reduced tariff would lead to losses exceeding one billion naira monthly, prompting a significant cut in power distribution to parts of the city.
Areas such as Ogui Layout, Uwani, Coal Camp, and New Haven have been affected, with residents reporting several days of total blackout. Many business owners say the situation has disrupted their operations, forcing them to rely on costly generators and causing losses for those dealing in perishable goods.
The Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission has since summoned both MainPower and EEDC to a meeting to find lasting solutions to the crisis and ensure steady power supply.
Although MainPower acknowledged ongoing interruptions, it did not officially confirm a complete 10-day blackout across the entire metropolis. Residents are advised to stay updated through verified company and regulatory announcements as discussions continue.
