In the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, Somtochukwu Christelle “Sommie” Maduagwu, an energetic news anchor, producer, and lawyer with ARISE News Channel, was tragically murdered during an armed robbery at her residence in Katampe, Abuja.

ARISE News, in a statement posted on its official channels, confirmed that she succumbed to fatal injuries inflicted in the attack. The management described her as a vibrant voice who engaged and connected with viewers, and called the loss devastating.

Born December 26, 1995, Sommie was just 29 years old. Her roles at ARISE spanned news anchoring, reporting, and production, and she was widely admired for her professionalism and on-air presence. Outside broadcasting, she was a trained lawyer and was known among colleagues as a supportive friend and colleague.

The Federal Capital Territory Police have launched an investigation into the incident. ARISE News urged prompt and thorough police action, demanding that those responsible be brought to justice.

News of Sommie’s death has sent shockwaves across Nigeria’s media landscape. Colleagues, civil society organizations, legal professionals, and citizens have poured out condolences, mourning the loss of a rising star in journalism. Tributes emphasize both her journalistic courage and her promise as a young professional whose life was cut short.

As her family, friends, and industry mourn, many are also calling on authorities to treat this case with urgency, not only to honor Sommie’s memory, but as a warning that no citizen should feel unsafe even in their own home.

May her soul rest in peace.
