The US Embassy Cautions Nigerian Students to Obey Visa Rules or Risk Losing Study Rights

The United States Mission in Nigeria has warned Nigerian students in the US to strictly follow the terms of their student visas or risk losing the opportunity to continue their education in the country.

In its August 2025 advisory, the embassy emphasized that students must remain enrolled full-time, actively attend classes, and stay engaged in their academic programs. Dropping courses, abandoning studies, or reducing course loads without official approval from their school could result in immediate visa cancellation.

F-1 and M-1 visa holders are admitted to the US on the condition that they fully pursue the programs for which their visas were granted. Students who miss classes, fail to meet the minimum course requirements, or change programs without notifying their Designated School Official (DSO) risk breaking US immigration laws. Such violations can lead not only to visa revocation but also make it difficult to obtain future US visas.

The embassy highlighted that the US Department of Homeland Security monitors all international students through the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), which keeps track of enrollment and compliance. By law, schools must report any student who fails to maintain valid status.

This warning follows tighter checks on visa compliance in recent years, during which some Nigerian students have been deported or denied re-entry for violating their visa terms, often due to dropping out or working without authorization.

The mission urged students to stay in close contact with their school’s international office before making any academic changes and to fully understand their immigration obligations to protect their right to study in the United States.
