Protests Over Missing Materials Disrupt Enugu South By-Election

The Enugu South Urban Constituency by-election failed to take place as planned on Saturday at Uwani Secondary School, despite a large turnout of voters. The attempt to conduct the election was ultimately thwarted by missing electoral materials.

Polling officials arrived at the venue but lacked critical documents, particularly the result sheets necessary for vote recording. Voter turnout had been high, and prospective participants were ready, but the absence of result sheets caused immediate disruption.

Similar incidents had occurred during local government elections in Enugu in 2024, when electoral materials, especially result sheets, were missing in several polling units. Agents of major political parties, including the All Progressives Congress, Labour Party, and the All Progressives Grand Alliance, protested in different wards and refused to allow voting until proper documents were provided. Reports also showed protests in Awgu Ward 9, parts of Udi, and Trans-Ekulu, where political party representatives flagged the same issue.

These systemic failures undermined confidence in the electoral process. Voter turnout diminished, logistical preparedness seemed questionable, and opposition parties described the process as flawed and incomplete.

The cancelled by-election at Uwani Secondary School has now underscored a broader pattern of administrative shortcomings that continue to hinder democratic participation in Enugu State and raise urgent questions about the credibility of future polls.
