Mokwa Bridge Collapse: Tinubu Approves ₦16.7bn for Reconstruction

In response to catastrophic flooding in Mokwa, Niger State, President Bola Tinubu has approved ₦16.7 billion for the immediate reconstruction of the washed-away Mokwa Bridge. This funding was announced by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, following discussions with the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, in Abakaliki. Idris emphasized that this allocation underscores the administration’s swift response to urgent infrastructure needs, particularly for the ten-span bridge that collapsed in May.

This comes after a directive issued by President Tinubu through the Federal Ministry of Works to repair the critical roadway once serving as a key transit link between Nigeria’s northern and southern regions. The Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, revealed this during a condolence visit to Mokwa, where he relayed the president’s instruction to swiftly restore vehicular access and rehabilitate the damaged structure.

The catalyst for this urgent action was the devastating flood that struck on May 28, 2025. Torrential rainfall—compounded by dam failure, deforestation, and poor drainage—submerged Mokwa, destroying more than 4,000 homes, two bridges, and two major roads, while displacing thousands and leaving over 500 dead and more than 600 missing.
