Ex-Lagos Lawmaker Urges Tinubu to Grant Nnamdi Kanu Presidential Pardon

A former Lagos State House of Assembly member, Hon. Jude Chukwuemeka Idimogu, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to use his constitutional authority to grant clemency to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Speaking to journalists on Monday about Kanu’s prolonged detention, Idimogu said his concern was not about determining who was right or wrong in the ongoing legal case, but about finding a political solution that would restore peace to the South-East and foster national stability.

“No individual or group can fight the government,” Idimogu said. “I’m only pleading with Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to act as the father of the nation and use his compassionate powers. What we need now is clemency — a political solution.”

Kanu, arrested in Nairobi, Kenya, in 2021 and extradited to Nigeria, has remained in detention on charges including treasonable felony. His continued imprisonment has sparked protests and unrest in the South-East.

Idimogu, who also serves as the deputy leader of Ndigbo in the Lagos chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), stressed that releasing Kanu would be a reconciliatory step ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“A presidential pardon would calm tensions and revive economic activities in the South-East, which has been badly affected by insecurity. The average Igbo man is a trader, and business has slowed drastically. This can change if Kanu is released,” he noted.

He urged South-East governors, Igbo leaders, and well-meaning Nigerians from all regions to support the call for Kanu’s release as a step toward healing and unity.

“The South-East was once peaceful. Today, insecurity has taken over. We know President Tinubu as a compassionate leader, and this is a chance to prove it again,” Idimogu added.

He concluded that granting clemency to Kanu could improve the APC’s political standing in the region. “If this is done, the South-East will never forget President Tinubu. It will bring peace, votes, and goodwill,” he said.
