By-elections: APC Raises Alarm over Alleged Malpractice in Kano
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has raised serious concerns over alleged irregularities in the rerun elections for Ghari/Tsanyawa and the bye-election in Bagwai/Shanono federal constituencies, held on August 16, 2025.
Security agencies, including the Nigerian Police Force, NSCDC, FRSC, and others, were deployed en masse to ensure the elections ran smoothly. Following disruptions in previous attempts, a peace accord was signed by political parties to commit to non-violence. A restriction of movement was implemented from midnight on Friday, August 15, lasting until 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 16; only essential vehicles—such as those of electoral officers, observers, ambulances, and fire services—were exempt. State-owned security outfits, including vigilante groups, were explicitly banned from polling units, and voters displaying political logos or loitering were denied entry.
Despite these precautions, APC warned of suspected malpractice in several areas. Reports from election day indicated an ominous influx of heavily armed, sponsored political thugs in both Bagwai/Shanono and Ghari/Tsanyawa, prompting fear among residents—some of whom reportedly fled their homes.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies had previously issued strong statements at a security summit, pledging preparations—including updated BVAS devices and training of poll workers—to prevent disruptions. These measures were designed to address the violent incidents that derailed earlier elections in the region.
The APC insists these threats reflect ongoing attempts to manipulate outcomes and called for vigilance from the security agencies. At the same time, the police assured orderly conduct of the polls, urging all political actors to respect the law, and deployed sufficient personnel to enforce peace throughout voting.
These elections are viewed as both a test of INEC’s coordination with security forces and a critical moment for democratic credibility in Kano. The presence of armed groups and the APC’s claims underscore enduring tensions in the state’s political landscape, where voter safety and fair play remain pressing concerns.
