By-Elections 2025: IGP Egbetokun Deploys Police and Enforces Movement Restrictions in 13 States
Ahead of the by-elections scheduled for Saturday, August 16, 2025, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered comprehensive security measures across 13 states. These measures aim to ensure a peaceful and credible electoral process.
The affected states include Anambra, Kano, Oyo, Taraba, Enugu, Adamawa, Edo, Jigawa, Kogi, Ogun, Zamfara, and Niger. In these states, all forms of vehicular movement—by road, water, or other means—will be restricted from 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on election day. Exemptions apply to INEC officials, accredited journalists, election observers, ambulances responding to emergencies, and firefighters.
To bolster security, senior officers, including Assistant Inspectors-General of Police and Commissioners of Police, have been deployed to collaborate with state commands. Additionally, tactical units such as the Police Mobile Force, Special Intervention Squad, and Force Intelligence Department have been mobilized to strategic locations.
The IGP has reiterated the ban on security aides and escorts accompanying VIPs or political figures to polling units and collation centers. Furthermore, state-owned security outfits, quasi-security units, and private security companies are prohibited from participating in election security duties.
These measures underscore the commitment to maintaining law and order during the electoral process, ensuring that citizens can exercise their voting rights freely and without intimidation.
