ASUU Nsukka Zone Issues Strike Notice Over Unmet Demands
The Nsukka Zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a formal strike notice to the federal government, alerting students and parents of a potential disruption to academic activities.
The notice was delivered on Thursday during a press conference held at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). The zone, which comprises ASUU branches from the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State University, Godfrey Okoye University, and the University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences Umuagwo, cited the government's continued neglect of its demands as the primary reason for the impending action.
Key issues highlighted by the union include the non-implementation of the 2009 FG-ASUU Agreement, the failure to adopt the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) for payroll management, and the unpaid arrears of academic allowances owed to its members.
The Zonal Coordinator, Comrade Raphael Amokaha, stated that the notice serves as a final warning to the government to address these long-standing issues. He emphasized that the zone is prepared to join a nationwide strike if their grievances are not resolved, potentially halting academic activities across the five affiliated institutions.
This development raises concerns about a possible recurrence of the extensive eight-month nationwide ASUU strike that paralyzed the university system in 2022. Students and parents are advised to await further updates as the situation develops.
