Adamawa By-Elections: APC and PDP Accused of Vote-Buying Despite Security Deployment

The Adamawa State by-elections were overshadowed by widespread reports of vote-buying allegedly involving agents of both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), even as security operatives maintained a strong presence at polling centres.

Officials of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) confirmed arrests linked to the malpractice. Two suspects were picked up near Yelwa Primary School in Mayo Belwa Local Government Area with ₦500,000 cash, suspected to be earmarked for voter inducement.

The contest for the Ganye constituency seat in the Adamawa State House of Assembly remains tense following the death of the former APC lawmaker, Abdulmalik Jauro. While the PDP maintains that Ganye is its traditional base, the APC insists it retains dominance in the area. In the midst of the rivalry, PDP leaders accused the APC of distributing fertilizers and other items in what they described as another form of vote-buying.

Despite the heavy deployment of security agencies to safeguard the exercise, the practice persisted across some polling areas. The arrests by the ICPC highlight how entrenched electoral corruption remains, raising fresh doubts about the credibility of the polls in Adamawa State.
